The BRDC National Supersports Championship

The National Supersports Championship has been organised by the British Racing Drivers' Club since 1965. It is a series for small sports racing cars. Now, all the cars have mid-engined space frame chassis, with 220bhp Vauxhall/Opel 16v 2.0 Litre engines. The cars use competition tyres and brakes, and are roughly as fast as a Formula 3 car, although much cheaper. National Supersports is the top British series for sports prototypes. It is only two steps from the highest level of sports car racing, either via the Privilege Insurance British GT Championship, or the Sports Racing World Cup. Cars from both series can be entered at Le Mans, or in the American Le Mans Series, now the premier sports car championship in the world.

Although it is not actually shown on British television, there is TV coverage of the series, and it supports the British Formula 3 and GT championships at most rounds, so there are always lots of spectators. The paddocks are open to everyone to look around. There are plans to run a British series for SR2 class Sports Racing World Cup cars in conjunction with National Supersports.
